The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting ‘shelter in place’ orders have significantly impacted the operation and management of community associations. We are in uncharted territory and there is much uncertainty with respect to how best to navigate the challenges we are presently facing. The most important thing for any community is to stay informed and follow the directives of the federal, state and local governments with respect to social distancing and other guidelines to ensure the health and safety of members and guests. Any action taken should be done in consultation with the association’s legal counsel to ensure compliance with the law and best practices at the time of implementation. As the ‘shelter in place’ restrictions are gradually lifted and ultimately come to an end, we will likely be faced with a ‘new normal’ that will require communities to make changes in some aspects of operation and management.
